Preston may well be in the market for another defender this month, yet George Edmundson is a surprise name linked.

Ben Davies has been solid and Jordan Storey is very promising, but there are problems elsewhere.

It saddens me to say this, but there are now concerns over Tom Clarke and Paul Huntington, who haven’t looked great this term.

Both are in their 30’s now, and whilst fans may want a proven defender in the 24-28 age range, another youngster has been linked today.

Sky Sports (10:14am) report that Preston want Oldham talent Edmundson, who has impressed in League Two.

Scunthorpe are believed to have failed with a £200,000 bid. Fleetwood Town, Peterborough United and Wigan Athletic are also keen.

Edmundson, 21, has come through the Oldham ranks, and has even earned some comparisons to ex-Latics star James Tarkowski.

He has been a regular for Oldham this season, and his performances appear to have attracted North End’s interest.

At 6ft 3in tall, Edmundson may figure as a long-term successor to Huntington, possessing great size and aerial ability.

Yet adding another young centre back alongside Davies and Storey would be a surprise, even if Edmundson is impressing at Oldham.

Another young defender isn’t really what North End need right now, but more proven players go for more money than Preston are often willing to pay.
