Preston North End beat Derby County 1-0 on Saturday afternoon – and that must have been sweet for Emil Riis.

This was not vintage Preston; Alex Neil’s men were showing promising signs until Martyn Waghorn was given a straight red card for the Rams, and then the problems arose.

North End aren’t particularly great at breaking down low blocks, and it looked like an elusive open goal would prove impossible to find.

However, Alan Browne popped up with a superb finish in the 97th minute, snatching a 1-0 victory as Preston made it two 1-0 wins in a row.

Preston players were clearly ecstatic at the final whistle, and this one certainly meant a lot to ex-Derby striker Riis.

The Dane came on as a second-half substitute as Preston went seeking a winner, but didn’t really have as much of an impact as Neil would have liked.

Riis didn’t quite get his personal revenge on Derby, who released the striker in 2018 having failed to break through at Pride Park.

He did though get to taste victory against the Rams, and he took to Instagram to celebrate the victory, admitting how happy he was to beat his old club with such a dramatic late winner from Browne.
