Report: Newcastle United now want to sign former Preston loan misfit Stephy Mavididi

Preston fans didn’t really get to see the best of Stephy Mavididi, but he could end up being Newcastle United’s next big transfer.

North End fans will remember Mavididi arriving on loan from Arsenal in the summer of 2017.

Coming off a fine loan spell at Charlton Athletic, Mavididi showed himself to be a real box of tricks in the final third.

Alex Neil was hoping Mavididi would do the same for Preston, but it never really happened.

Mavididi started just three league games for Preston before cutting his season-long loan spell short in January 2018.

Few could have really expected his career to go the way it has.

Mavididi joined Juventus just months after leaving Preston, playing mostly for their Under-23’s with one first-team showing.

After five goals on loan at Dijon, French rivals Montpellier pounced to sign Mavididi permanently in 2020.

Now developing rapidly, Mavididi has racked up 15 goals in 53 league outings for Montpellier – and could earn a big move back to England.

The Daily Mail report that Newcastle want to sign Mavididi for a fee of around £15million this month.

Having splashed out for Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, Newcastle are now viewing Mavididi as another possible recruit for Eddie Howe.

Mavididi has developed well since leaving his Preston loan spell – as many do.

Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck, Josh King, Lukas Nmecha… the list of young attackers who struggle on loan at Preston but shine elsewhere keeps growing.

Mavididi is another, and we could soon see him featuring for Newcastle in the Premier League.
