Joe Savage decided to leave Preston North End after feeling ‘marginalised’ under the reign of Peter Ridsdale, sparking his move to Heart of Midlothian.
Savage followed Alex Neil to Preston in 2017, arriving as a head of recruitment and chief scout having worked together at Norwich City.
It’s unclear just how much say Savage had on transfers at Preston, so some of the criticism he has received isn’t really fair.
After all, Savage’s work at Hearts is now very impressive having bene given much more control there than he had at Preston.
Now, The Athletic claim that Savage left Preston in part due to feeling ‘marginalised’ by the influence of Ridsdale.
Ridsdale has been at Preston for almost 10 years now, working as an advisor to Trevor Hemmings and as a director.
Recruiting players is never a one-man job; you need scouts and analysts to find players and eventually make moves.
Savage’s background is in that area, so losing him due to greater influence from Ridsdale is a blow, if this report is true.

North End’s recruitment in recent times has been scattergun, with too many punts on injury-prone players like Izzy Brown and Connor Wickham as well as two-year deals for players seemingly regressing in Greg Cunningham and Ched Evans.
We can only hope this doesn’t happen again with James Beet, a recruitment analyst who arrived with a strong reputation from Barnsley.
Recruitment staff want their opinion trusted, as is the case at many other clubs – and Preston may need to move with the times to avoid another Savage-like departure.
