Former Preston North End boss Alex Neil could make a return to management with Sheffield United once Slavisa Jokanovic leaves the club.

Sheffield United beat Reading in midweek but that hasn’t changed the situation at Bramall Lane.

Jokanovic is still going to lose his job later today, according to reports from the Sheffield Star.

Paul Heckingbottom will take charge on an interim basis, but Neil is believed to be a key target.

It’s claimed that Neil has admirers inside Bramall Lane and he could be brought in if Heckingbottom isn’t given the job permanently.

Neil left Preston back in March after a torrid run of form, and hasn’t returned to football since.

The Scot worked wonders for much of his time at Preston and his contribution really shouldn’t be forgotten.

It ended badly, but the way he dealt with having his best players sold at regular intervals was admirable.

Neil has been linked with a number of jobs of late, including Rangers, but Sheffield United could be the one for him.

If that happens, Neil would be in line for a first return to Deepdale on Boxing Day as Preston host the Blades.
