Rangers were linked with Preston goalkeeper Declan Rudd last week, and it seems that the two clubs could go head to head for another shot-stopper.

Football Insider claimed last week that Rangers are eyeing up a move for Rudd, with Steven Gerrard keen to add another goalkeeper at the end of the season.

Preston will be keen on another goalkeeper too. Rudd, Mathew Hudson, Michael Crowe and loaned-out Chris Maxwell are all out of contract next summer, and Connor Ripley has yet to really show that he can be first choice.

Now, The Star in Sheffield claim that Preston want Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, but face competition from Rangers, Derby County and Blackburn Rovers.

Dawson, 24, is out of contract at the end of the season, and may well look to leave on a free transfer. With six appearances this season, Dawson is mostly used as cover for Keiren Westwood, so may seek first-team football next summer.

Dawson is highly rated at Hillsborough, and was not only born in Sheffield but also came up through the club’s ranks. Dawson grew up supporting Wednesday, so leaving his boyhood club won’t be an easy decision.

With Dawson’s contract running down, there may be a chance for Preston to target a cut-price move in January. Fans would most likely want a proven first-choice goalkeeper though, and Dawson may feel a little similar to the deal for Connor Ripley earlier this year.

He’s only ever made 30 Championship appearances, so could be something of a gamble. With so much interest though, Dawson finds himself a wanted man ahead of his big decision in 2020.
