According to The Sun (04/01, p67), Preston are in the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur winger Jack Clarke.
North End are likely to be in the market for a new striker this month, but a new winger shouldn’t be ruled out. Seani Maguire has struggled of late, Tom Barkhuizen hasn’t scored in 12 games and Billy Bodin’s 10-game goal drought only ended on Saturday.
Finding another wide man to provide a spark going forward would be ideal, and it seems that North End are looking at a Premier League loan move to solve their issues.
It’s claimed that Preston are battling for the signing of Spurs youngster Clarke, but face competition from Championship rivals Millwall.
Clarke, 19, came up through the Leeds United ranks, and impressed last season under Marcelo Bielsa. A strange illness early in 2019 appeared to hamper him, but he still earned a big summer move to Tottenham.
Spurs loaned him back to Leeds, but he was unable to hit top form back at Elland Road. With just one Championship appearance this season – a 19-minute substitute role against Luton Town in November – Clarke’s season has been a nightmare.
Tottenham unsurprisingly recalled him, and are now looking to loan him out elsewhere. Preston are allegedly hoping to land the teenager for the rest of the season, giving Alex Neil another option on the flanks.
At his best, Clarke is quick and skilful, able to go past players at ease. His dip in 2019 has been concerning, but there is clearly talent there – and a loan move could make sense for all as Preston seek a spark of excitement in the final third.
