Preston striker Emil Riis is on fire this season – and his exploits could end up giving him a route into the Danish national team.

Riis scored twice against Luton Town on Saturday; his first a stunning drive from a tight angle before adding a second from the penalty spot.

The 23-year-old now has hit seven goals in 15 Championship outings, as well as four goals in four EFL Cup games.

That’s a huge improvement on just two league goals in 38 games last season.

Riis has signed a new contract until 2025 and everything is going well for him.

Now, it could get even better.

Ekstrabladet in Denmark report that Riis is one player on the radar of Danish national team boss Kasper Hjulmand.

Riis has played for Denmark at Under-16 ,17, 19, 20 and 21 levels. All Riis needs now is a senior cap, and Hjulmand is thought to be keeping very close tabs on him.

Some other notable names on the list are Philip Billing, Mathias Jorgensen and Jonas Lossl.

With a World Cup on the horizon next year, Riis could suddenly find himself in contention for a Denmark call-up if he keeps scoring.

There is major competition for Riis. Kasper Dolberg, Martin Braithwaite, Jonas Wind, Yussuf Poulsen and Andreas Cornelius are all vying for playing time with Denmark.

Riis is quick and can’t stop scoring though, so you can understand why Hjulmand is eyeing him up for Denmark honours in the future.
