Former Preston loanee Jayson Molumby could now make a return to the Championship as Swansea City seek to sign the Brighton and Hove Albion ace.

That’s according to The Sun on Sunday (22/08, p59), who claim that Molumby is the player Swansea want to replace Matt Grimes.

Grimes is thought to be on his way out of Swansea before the transfer deadline, leaving Swansea with a huge hole to fill in midfield.

Molumby is now thought to be on the radar, with Swansea pursing him the Irishman either on loan or permanently.

The 22-year-old arrived at Preston in January with fans excited about his arrival having impressed with Millwall during the 2019-20 season.

Molumby was deployed as a number 10 under Alex Neil, which seemed like a very awkward fit for his ability.

Molumby is energetic, can get around the pitch well, uses the ball smartly and can carry through midfield. At Millwall, much of his work was in a midfield two in front of the back four and he gets stuck in when needed.

At Preston, he was used further forward and it just didn’t quite suit his game. He had a great game against Birmingham City in January, setting up Scott Sinclair’s winner with a great driving run.

Molumby seemed to lose confidence in a struggling side though, and his Preston spell ended without much attention as he played just four times under Frankie McAvoy.

There is no doubting that Molumby has Championship quality. The way Swansea and Russell Martin teams tend to control the ball suits Molumby well, with his ability to keep possession fitting them well.

His Preston spell may not have lived up to the billing, but don’t be surprised to see Molumby becoming a midfield metronome if he joins Swansea, with a move to South Wales seemingly a better fit than he was in Alex Neil’s Preston at the time.
