Ryan Lowe tells Derby fans what to expect from Tom Barkhuizen

Derby County are heading into their League One season with a very different looking squad to the one that was relegated from the Championship last time round.

As well as new owners, the Rams also have a new manager, with Liam Rosenior taking over from Wayne Rooney, albeit only on an ‘interim’ basis at the moment.

One of their first signings of the summer was Tom Barkhuizen, who left Preston North End after his contract expired this summer.

More than capable of shining in League One, the signing of Barkhuizen was well received by Derby fans, with the North End faithful confident he can have a good season for The Rams providing his injury issues are behind him.

In his five-and-a-half years at Preston, Barkhuizen always found himself towards the top of the club’s goals and assists charts.

A lightening burst of pace and great finishing led to him scoring many important goals, and even in his short time working with him, Ryan Lowe recognised the talent and commitment of the former Morecambe winger.

Recently speaking on Radio 5 Live, Ryan Lowe spoke about Barkhuizen’s move to Derby whilst current Rams player Curtis Davies was also in the studio.

“Tom found himself injured when we came in, he played 30 minutes of a game, and then got injured. His contract was up, and when you come in as a new manager you want to bring your own players in,” said Lowe.

“What Tom gives you is 100% effort every week. He’s scored a couple of goals already, he can play on the right, on the left, up top, just off the front. He’s a willing runner, very energetic and he can score a good goal. That’s what they’ll get out of him,” he added.

Derby have added some top Championship players to their side as they look for an immediate return back to that level.

David McGoldrick, James Collins, James Chester, and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing are just some of the players who’ve joined with a wealth of Championship experience at the very least under their belt.

Many Preston fans would have been happy to see Barkhuizen extend his stay at the club, but he perhaps doesn’t quite fit into Ryan Lowe’s preferred formation.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him reach double figures for both goals and assists for Derby this season if he can stay fit.
