Former Preston North End striker Sean Maguire has found himself a new club after leaving Coventry City.

The 29-year-old has signed a one-year- deal with Carlisle United who were promoted into League One after winning the play-offs last season.

Maguire will now be managed by former Preston North End manager Paul Simpson who has enjoyed great success at Carlisle over two spells in his career.

Maguire will also link up with Paul Huntington who captained The Cumbrians to success at Wembley last season.

The two players played alongside each other at Deepdale for five years between 2017 and 2022. Huntington may have had a word with Simpson and Maguire to get this deal over the line.

It represents a chance for Maguire to get his career going again after disruption with injuries over the years and a loss of his goal scoring touch.

After a promising first season with Preston where he scored 10 goals in 24 league games he never managed to score more than five in a season after that.

A short spell with Coventry last season didn’t give him much game time so it isn’t a surprise to see him drop down to League One.

He’s only been given a one-year deal so he’ll have to hit the ground running in the hope of extended his stay with the club.

He hasn’t played for Republic of Ireland for a couple of years, so a good run at Carlisle could give him a chance of adding to his 12 caps as well.

He’ll have Joe Garner as a potential strike partner at the club. Although their paths never crossed at Preston, they could develop a good partnership at that level that would cause plenty of problems for defences.

Former youth player Jack Armer has also enjoyed three years with Carlisle and with so many Preston connections at that club, they are one to keep a close eye on this season. Perhaps one of them can score a memorable winner against Blackpool.
