When Preston signed Sepp van den Berg in January, few really knew what to expect.
The Dutchman was thrown into the deal that saw Preston sell Ben Davies to Liverpool, with the Reds keen for Van den Berg to gain first-team experience.
Van den Berg hadn’t even been considered by Jurgen Klopp despite his injury crisis, so some were worrying that he wouldn’t quite be up to Championship standard.
So far, the 19-year-old has been superb. He has mostly played as a right back or right wing back, though did play in his usual centre back role against Stoke City on Saturday.
From being a relative unknown to North End fans when he arrived just over two months ago, Van den Berg is now seen as a priority signing this summer.
It’s believed that Preston have first refusal on Van den Berg should they want him back next season, though The Athletic now claim that other teams want to sign him.
Van den Berg has now told Lancs Live that he has noticed Preston fans like him, and that is part of the reason why he would love to come back to North End next season.
The defender added that it’s an ‘easy answer’ because he loves it at Preston, and whilst the decision is a while off yet, it seems North End have a real chance of beating other clubs to his signing this summer.
“For me it’s further down the line but yeah, of course I have noticed it a little bit which makes me happy and confident – that people are happy for me to be here,” said Van den Berg. “That is nice to hear and like I say I’m really enjoying it here, and if in the summer my time at Liverpool isn’t ready yet and I have to go out on loan again, then if Preston is still an opportunity for me I would love to come back.”
“That’s an easy answer for me, I love it here. Of course, when you sign on loan you’re hoping to play but it’s not easy – I’m really happy, just getting the experience and getting the minutes in, for me especially still being young. I really like the team atmosphere, the people around here are really nice and yeah I’m enjoying it,” he added.
