Sky Sports name two former Preston players as leading young players in the Championship

The start of the Championship season is edging closer, as fans eagerly await to be seeing their team kickstart the 2022/23 season.

Preston North End will start with a Lancashire derby away to Wigan Athletic who secured a return to this level last season.

As part of their preview for the Football League season getting underway, Sky Sports have listed their top 25 players under the age of 25 in the Championship.

Two current Preston players feature in top scorer from last season Emil Riis, and new signing Ben Woodburn.

There are however two players who used to be on the books of the club, who are obviously still obviously rated very highly by others, and one in particular probably deserved more of a chance at North End.

Tyrhys Dolan has excelled at Blackburn Rovers since leaving Preston, and has gone on to gain international caps for England Under 20’s and has even been linked with Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Now Blackburn’s number 10, Dolan is a key player for the club, and it makes you wonder whether he could have fitted into the current PNE squad and been utilised by Ryan Lowe.

Capable of playing anywhere across the front, Sky Sports wrote; “What Dolan lacks in height, he makes up for in electric pace, excellent close control and exquisite skill, particularly when approaching the penalty area.”

Another player to follow in Dolan’s footsteps this summer after being released by Preston is Ethan Walker.

We’ll see whether he can have a similar impact as Dolan did, and if so it’ll be another steal for Rovers.

The other former player on the list is Jayson Molumby.

The midfielder completed a permanent transfer to West Bromwich Albion after a loan spell last season from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Molumby was on loan at Preston the season before last, but never really cemented a place in the side.

In what was a strange season for Preston played behind closed doors, and changing from Alex Neil to Frankie McAvoy towards the end, it didn’t seem like the right environment for Molumby to showcase his skills.

Molumby also faced a lot of competition in the central midfield roles at the time and only made 16 appearances for PNE.

That’s something he will have to contend with at West Brom as well, especially after the free transfer signing of John Swift, who has caused problems in this league for years.

Still only 22-years-old, Molumby has 14 caps for Republic of Ireland and is very highly rated by Sky Sports alongside many others.

Steve Bruce will see him as a key defensive midfielder for his team, capable of winning the ball back and turning defence into attack with his passing skills.
