Todd Kane has become the latest former Preston North End player to join League Two promotion-chasers Stockport County.

You would have to be a pretty die-hard PNE fan to remember every signing from the Graham Westley era.

Some came and left without even playing a game, like Richard Wright and Rhys Taylor, others stuck around for years.

One who didn’t spend too long at Deepdale was Todd Kane, who arrived on loan from Chelsea in November 2012.

Kane was a highly-regarded prospect in the Chelsea ranks and came in to offer another right back option for Westley.

Kane only ended up making five appearances for PNE and by January 2013, he had moved on to Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers.

The former England youth international became one of Chelsea’s man loan rangers, heading on to Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, NEC Nijmegen, Groningen, Oxford United and Hull City.

Kane has been a fixture in the EFL over the years but after spells at Queens Park Rangers, Coventry City and Charlton Athletic, he jetted off to Gibraltar with Manchester 62.

That was a strange move, but Kane is now back in the EFL – and has joined a promotion-chasing side with a few ex-North Enders in the side.

Todd Kane joins Stockport County promotion charge

League Two side Stockport County have now confirmed the signing of Kane as a free agent, snapping him up until the end of the season.

County sit third at the moment, one point behind second-placed Wrexham and just three points shy of league leaders Mansfield Town.

Add in that Stockport have two games in hand on those promotion rivals and Dave Challinor’s men are in a strong position to secure promotion.

Kane will now come in and help County’s charge, joining two ex-North End players in the process.

Goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe has become a County legend having joined the club from AFC Fylde back in 2016.

Still featuring regularly, the 36-year-old – a product of the PNE youth ranks – has found a home at Edgeley Park and is looking for a third promotion with the club.

Then there is midfielder Ryan Croasdale, who spent more than 10 years in the North End ranks before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2014.

Croasdale joined Stockport In 2020, also from AFC Fylde, and has been a vital first-team player ever since.

We could now see Kane, Hinchliffe and Croasdale win promotion with Stockport and push them another step closer to League One after a difficult demise in recent times.
