Preston North End released Connor Wickham over the summer and he has now scored an incredible FA Cup goal for Forest Green Rovers.

PNE were looking for a striker on deadline day back in August 2021 but could only sign a winger in Josh Murphy instead.

North End did though pounce for a free agent as Connor Wickham earned a deal after a spell as a trialist.

Wickham had been let go by Crystal Palace after years of injury problems at Selhurst Park.

PNE were hoping that a fresh start would bring better fortunes for Wickham, handing him a short-term deal.

Wickham got through a cameo against West Bromwich Albion but went down injured just days later, in his first start against Cheltenham Town.

That was the last we saw of Wickham in a PNE shirt as Ryan Lowe chose not to extend his deal in January 2022.

Wickham spent the second half of the season at Milton Keynes Dons, scoring once in 15 appearances.

Forest Green Rovers were next to take a punt on Wickham as they matched PNE in giving the striker a short-term deal.

The 29-year-old has been playing well, scoring five times in 12 League One games whilst managing to stay fit.

Wickham grabbed the headlines on Saturday afternoon as he scored twice against non-league side South Shields in the FA Cup.

In the dying seconds of the game, Wickham spotted the South Shields goalkeeper off his line and executed a perfect lob from the half-way line.

Commentator Robyn Cowen branded the goal ‘sensational’ and it was surely the goal of the weekend in the FA Cup.

It’s nice to see Wickham back amongst the goals and staying off the treatment table, it’s of course just a shame that we couldn’t see that with PNE.
