Despite leaving the club nearly five years ago, Joey Garner remains a legend to most Preston North End fans. He was instrumental in promotion back to the Championship in 2015 and being a North End fan himself made it that much sweeter.

A scorer of some memorable goals during his time at Deepdale, Garner has always received a warm welcome when he’s returned with Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic.

His former Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy went over to Cyprus at the end of last year to take control of APOEL Nicosia. Although McCarthy’s time there was short lived, he was there long enough to bring Garner over with him. An offer to leave a struggling Wigan side to go over to sunnier climates was obviously too hard for him to resist.

After scoring his first goal for the club – who have won 28 Cypriot league titles – last week against Olympiakos Nicosia, on Sunday the 32-year-old bagged a hat-trick in a 3-1 over Nea Salamis.

Joey took each of his goals well and it lifts APOEL up to 7th position in the Cypriot top flight. The ginger haired striker scored 57 goals in just over three-and-a-half years with The Lilywhites and his song would regularly be sung at Deepdale during that time.

Many North End fans will be delighted to see him still doing so well in the twilight of his career. Oh Joey Garner…
