Gillingham picked up a crucial win on Saturday afternoon, hammering AFC Wimbledon 4-2 away from home.

The Gills are one of a whole host of teams involved in the League One survival battle. A trip to struggling Wimbledon was a must-win for Steve Lovell’s side, and that’s just what they got.

The game saw Preston playmaker Graham Burke grab his first Gillingham goal too. The Irishman joined the Gills on loan in January, and has been regular under Lovell so far.

Burke’s first Gillingham goal was somewhat bizarre. The 25-year-old hit a long-range half-volley with his left foot, dipping towards goal. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale attempted to smother it, but could only fumble it over the goal line.

Burke is seemingly faring well with Gillingham, and a first goal for the club may give him additional confidence moving forward. The highlights above also show Burke taking another long-range strike on his left foot, hitting the post.

All in all, this is great for North End. It’s likely that Burke won’t have a future at Deepdale; he’s far more suited to League One football than Championship football.

Burke impressing for Gillingham keeps his value steady and increases the chances of a permanent exit. That could be with Gillingham or another League One club, with rivals surely keeping tabs on him.

That would get Burke off the books and a little bit of cash coming in. However, it seems unlikely that North End will get their money back from Burke’s move from Shamrock Rovers – and cutting the losses appears to be the best way forward this summer.
