Preston North End completed their first signing of the summer last week, landing Liverpool talent Calvin Ramsay on loan for the season.

The Scot can play as a right back or right wing back and will hopefully add real attacking quality to Ryan Lowe’s side.

Ramsay has been incredibly highly-rated since breaking through at Aberdeen, prompting Liverpool to sign him for £4million rising to £6.5million.

Ramsay wasn’t able to make much of an impact this past season though, suffering with back and knee problems.

PNE will hope that those issues are behind Ramsay and that he can now become the next great loan star at Deepdale.

North End fans are desperate to know more about the new man, so here are verdicts from coaches and pundits who have seen Ramsay up close…

Dave Cormack, Aberdeen chairman (Scottish Daily Express)

“There are not many right back at his age like him, doing what he does. Look at the data and all the clubs look at the same (scouting) systems. He is in the elite upper bracket, right up there, for a young right-back in Europe.”

Brian Rice, ex-Hamilton Academical boss (Daily Record)

“He’s good on the ball with both feet. He has great energy, his deliveries are excellent and he has a real confidence despite being relatively young. Calvin always wants to take the game to the opposition. He reminds me so much of [Nathan] Patterson, even to his looks and his build. It really is incredible, certainly in my eyes. I can see why people are raving about him.”

Stephen Glass, former Aberdeen manager (The Scotsman after facing Qarabag)

“His performance level was brilliant throughout playing against a real top player or two on that side, three if you include the centre forward as well. It’s a great learning experience and it doesn’t look like he has to learn but there are little situations where he could have done better. He’s going to be a top, top player.”

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool boss (BBC Sport)

“He is an outstanding talent. We scouted him over a lot of games and he did exceptionally well. For a young age – the way he plays – he is a real player. He is really involved in everything. He’s a real talent and I am really excited about him.”

“When he arrived here, he had this issue with the back so he was out. Now I’ve seen him two or three times training, but it is the first few sessions. Now we know much more about him as a boy. He is outstanding, well-educated, friendly – a really good boy. Now we start working, that’s it. How it is for all of them in that age group: the sky is the limit.”

“The start of his career was really good. Now we had that little interruption, but we are not done. We have to make sure we can work with him as much to give him the best chance of having the best possible career.”

Andrew Robertson, fellow Liverpool and Scotland defender (BBC Sport)

“He doesn’t seem fazed by a lot of things and takes everything in his stride – that’s credit to him. Everyone at Liverpool is excited to see how far he can go and I’m sure everyone in Scotland is the same.”

“He’s coming up against the world’s best right-back in Trent, but since he’s been back in training, he’s been training really well and obviously got his reward with his debut.”

Stephen Warnock, Sky Sports pundit and ex-Liverpool defender (BBC Sport after display v Derby County)

“Ramsay has been the standout performer. Defensively as well, he’s got a real turn of pace and understands where he wants to take a player. He looks a player.”
