Most fans want to hear about incoming signings at Deepdale, but we have news of a potential outgoing.
Callum Robinson’s departure to Sheffield United was a blow, and his old pal from Aston Villa and Deepdale could join him in leaving North End.
We understand that Wigan Athletic are interested in signing Johnson, and are pursuing a £1.5million deal. The midfielder may now head over to the DW Stadium, ending a four-and-a-half year stay with Preston.
Johnson, 26, joined North End from Aston Villa in January 2015, having impressed on loan at Chesterfield. He made an instant impact and helped fire Preston to promotion, scoring eight times in 23 games in League One.
The Jamaican has now racked up more than 150 appearances for North End, scoring 31 times. Last year, Johnson signed a new contract until the summer of 2021, and continued to feature under Alex Neil.
Neil has always been a fan of Johnson despite criticism from fans over his inconsistent performances, but may now cash in for a seven-figure fee inside the final two years of his deal.
If Johnson does go, it’s imperative that North End sign another playmaking midfielder. Johnson’s best usage has been deep alongside Ben Pearson, often offering cover for Paul Gallagher.
Preston don’t have another player like Gallagher or Johnson in the ranks, and with Gallagher in his 30’s, Johnson must be replaced.
Many will be pleased with the fee, though losing him to a North West rival isn’t ideal. Hopefully we see the money reinvested, but we’ve heard that one before.
