Preston North End are interested in snapping up Leeds United talent Sam Greenwood ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

That is according to a report from The Daily Mail’s Tom Collomosse, who claims that Leeds talent Sam Greenwood is a wanted man.

It’s stated that four Championship clubs have registered an interest in signing Greenwood this week.

It will come as no surprise to PNE fans to hear that the three clubs joining North End in the race are Stoke City, Swansea City and Middlesbrough.

Those three clubs seem to come up in all of the PNE rumours at the moment and here we are again.

Leeds would only really consider loaning Greenwood out and much will depend on their own incoming business.

Daniel Farke’s men are desperate to add new faces this week and a deal for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Nadiem Amiri has already collapsed.

A move has been made for Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev and that deal could help pave the way for Greenwood to be loaned out.

Who is PNE target Sam Greenwood?

Greenwood was born in Sunderland and started his career in the Sunderland youth ranks.

A striker in his early years, Greenwood caught the eye of Arsenal and they forked out £500,000 rising to around £1million in 2018.

Greenwood impressed in the Arsenal Under-18’s, racking up 15 goals and six assists.

Leeds came calling in 2020 and struck a deal worth up to £3million, believing that Greenwood had huge potential.

Three years on, Greenwood has played 35 times for the Leeds first team, recording one goal and five assists.

Greenwood has been converted from a striker to more of an attacking midfield player at Leeds, but has sometimes played even deeper.

That means that whilst Gruev is more of a holding player, his potential arrival could still help Greenwood go out on loan.

The 21-year-old needs to be playing and has only featured for seven minutes in the first four games of the Championship season.

That just isn’t enough for Greenwood to develop and PNE could now offer him a route out of Elland Road for the season.

Greenwood’s ability as an attacking midfield player may mean that he is seen as a good fit in Ryan Lowe’s setup, with North End going for two attacking midfielders behind a striker in a 3-4-2-1.

Leeds will be weighing up whether or not to loan Greenwood out but he would seem like a very exciting addition for North End.
