Ben Davies could now leave Liverpool for Celtic, just months after Preston exit

When Preston sold Ben Davies to Liverpool in February, Celtic were left gutted – but the Bhoys may now have another chance at signing him.

North End allowed Davies to join Liverpool on deadline day, agreeing a deal worth £1.6million with a 20% sell-on clause.

Davies was inside the final six months of his contract, and with no plans to stay at Deepdale, Preston had to sell before he walked away for nothing.

Celtic had been tracking Davies for some time, and The Mirror reported that he was all set for a pre-contract agreement with the Bhoys before Liverpool swooped in.

Preston fans think the world of Davies, but he hasn’t even made a single appearance for Liverpool in a frustrating few months at Anfield.

One train of thought is that Davies needs time to adapt to Jurgen Klopp’s methods before making an impact, just like Andrew Robertson did following his move from Hull City in 2017.

Another is that Liverpool simply signed Davies on the cheap to then sell him for a profit in the next transfer window; something Preston wouldn’t mind given that sell-on clause.

The Daily Mail now state that Celtic are back in for Davies as new boss Ange Postecoglou seeks central defensive reinforcements.

If Davies does leave Liverpool, let’s hope the fee is upwards of £5million, bringing a seven-figure fee to Deepdale thanks to that clause.

Bringing Davies back to Deepdale would be nice, but seems almost impossible now. Whatever Davies decides, regular playing time has to be the priority for the 25-year-old.
