Preston splashed the cash on one League One midfielder as Ben Whiteman arrived from Doncaster Rovers – but they’re being linked with another.
In Whiteman, Ryan Ledson, Brad Potts and Tom Bayliss, Preston have spent north of £4million on signing midfielders from League One in the last three years.
You’d maybe think that Preston wouldn’t be looking for another one, even with Paul Gallagher announcing his retirement.
However, Football Insider claim that Preston are leading the race to sign Oxford United midfielder Cameron Brannagan, battling Millwall for him.
The 24-year-old has been one of Oxford’s star men this season, and has emerged as one of the top midfielders in League One.
Brannagan briefly played alongside Ledson at Oxford, and as a Manchester-born ex-Liverpool man, he may well be tempted by a move back up north.
For now though, Brannagan has admitted to the Oxford Mail that he isn’t interested in the rumours right now as his focus is just on Oxford’s play-off campaign.
“I’m not interested in all that stuff,” said Brannagan. “My main focus is trying to get promotion with this club, I don’t care about anything else. I’ve loved my time here, nothing’s changed. We go into the play-offs as a team and we want to go one further than last year,” he added.
Preston may be torn on what they want here. If Oxford win promotion, signing Brannagan would surely be nearly impossible. If they lose out to Blackpool in the semi-finals, that means success for our bitter rivals. Not quite Sophie’s Choice, but still something to think about.
