Report: Derby join Bolton and Rotherham in chase for ex-Preston ace Tom Barkhuizen

Derby County are looking to snap up Tom Barkhuizen after Preston decided to release him this summer, but Bolton and Rotherham are also keen.

That’s according to Alan Nixon and The Sun (15/05, p59), who claim that Barkhuizen is a man in demand this summer.

North End announced just a matter of days ago that Barkhuizen’s contract will not be renewed.

It turned out to be a rather dour end to a superb spell for Barkhuizen.

The winger joined North End from Morecambe back in 2017 and made a huge impact in the Championship.

Barkhuizen ended up spending more than five years at Preston and racked up more than 200 North End appearances.

Injuries and illness sadly took over this past season and Barkhuizen managed just 13 Championship outings.

Barkhuizen’s last Preston appearance came way back in January and Ryan Lowe has now decided to move on without him.

The 28-year-old is bound to attract plenty of interest and is allegedly wanted by Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise

There is also interest at home though as three Football League clubs are understood to be interested.

Nixon claims that Derby boss Wayne Rooney wants to sign Barkhuizen on a free transfer this summer.

Bolton Wanderers also want to lure Barkhuizen down to League One whilst promoted Rotherham United are keen to add him to their Championship squad.

All three clubs are ‘making offers’ for Barkhuizen in the hope of signing him this summer.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see Sunderland join the race for Barkhuizen too, with ex-Preston boss Alex Neil in charge there.

It’s unclear whether Derby will be able to strike a deal whilst the situation surrounding Chris Kirchner’s takeover continues.

Barkhuizen does appear to have real interest though and all Preston fans will want to see him fixed up with a club very soon.
