Derby County want former Preston ace Darnell Fisher, meaning he could reunite with his old North End teammate Tom Barkhuizen at Pride Park.

Preston allowed Barkhuizen to leave at the end of last season with his contract coming to an end.

Barkhuizen had spent more than five years at Deepdale, racking up 209 appearance for North End as well as 38 goals and 21 assists.

The time was right for Barkhuizen to move on and try something new, with Derby more than happy to swoop in.

The Rams were rebuilding their squad after relegation from the Championship and their takeover and decided to swoop in for Barkhuizen.

The 29-year-old has been featuring prominently for Derby this season, notching one goal and two assists in 12 League One outings.

Barkhuizen scored Derby’s third against Accrington Stanley on Saturday afternoon and he may end up being joined by a former North End teammate.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reports that Derby are interested in signing Middlesbrough defender Darnell Fisher.

It’s stated that new Rams boss Paul Warne wants a reunion with Fisher having coached him at Rotherham United before his Preston move.

When Boro signed Fisher, then-manager Neil Warnock noted that he spoke to Warne and he backed Fisher as a ‘smashing lad’.

That verdict may now lead to a reunion between Fisher and Warne during the January transfer window.

Fisher missed the whole of last season through injury and still hasn’t returned, meaning Boro may fancy getting him out on loan for first-team action next season.

It would be quite the sight to see Fisher and Barkhuizen link up again having played together so many times down the right flank for Preston.

North End fans would surely love to see Fisher get back playing again soon after his injury nightmare, and we may end up seeing Fisher and Barkhuizen in action against Preston next season if Derby secure promotion.
