Preston North End are joining both Celtic and Rangers in the race to sign Hammarby defender Nathaniel Adjei in the January transfer window.

That is according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, who reports that PNE are making an ‘ambitious move’ to land Adjei.

It’s claimed that PNE are in talks to land Adjei on loan from Hammarby with a permanent move materialising in the summer.

However, Hammarby want the permanent fee involved to be around £3million – a price beyond PNE at the moment.

Celtic and Rangers are both interested in signing Adjei, potentially offering him the chance to move to Glasgow in 2024.

Yet Nixon claims that PNE are ‘making the bigger push’ to land Adjei in January.

Who is rumoured PNE target Nathaniel Adjei?

Adjei hails from Teshie in Ghana and started out with Danbort FC in his homeland.

The defender moved to Sweden in 2021, joining Hammarby TFF in the third tier.

Adjei impressed enough to secure a move to the top flight with Hammarby IF, making the move from their feeder club.

Now with 30 first-team appearances under his belt in Sweden, Adjei has impressed under now-QPR boss Marti Cifuentes.

The Spaniard has predicted that Adjei will become a ‘top-notch defender’ in the coming years, believing that he has huge potential.

Adjei has played as both a centre back and as a right back with Hammarby, offering great flexibility with Ryan Lowe now often changing between a 3-4-2-1 and 4-2-3-1 system.

Sky Sports claim that teams in Belgium and Italy also want Adjei, meaning PNE would face some serious competition.

Adjei is a Ghana Under-23 international, meaning that he would likely qualify as ESC eligible for a move to England.

North End continue to look further afield

We have often called for PNE to look abroad for signings and recent moves suggest that the club is really trying in that regard.

Danish playmaker Mads Frøkjær-Jensen arrived from Odense over the summer, before Montenegro striker Milutin Osmajic completed a club-record move from Cadiz.

Canada winger Liam Millar also arrived on loan from Basel, albeit having previously been in the Liverpool ranks.

Adjei would fit a similar mould for PNE and he will now be a name to keep close tabs on heading towards January.
