Preston North End are reportedly interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa as the transfer push continues.

PNE have been busy of late, signing four players inside the last fortnight with Mads Frøkjær-Jensen, Duane Holmes, Will Keane and Layton Stewart all arriving.

Calvin Ramsay joined earlier in the window and PNE are now on the hunt for signing number six.

Everton striker Tom Cannon is the dream addition for PNE fans but a defender is now being linked.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reports that North End are now interested in buying Sheffield Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa.

It’s suggested that Wednesday are looking to wheel and deal this summer and may cash in on Iorfa.

The defender is inside the final year of his contract at Hillsborough and the Owls may be tempted to sell.

Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb are also thought to be keen but Iorfa is now a new name on the PNE wish list.

Who is Dominic Iorfa?

Iorfa started in the ranks of hometown club Southend United before moving on to the Wolverhampton Wanderers ranks at 15.

Iorfa spent six years with Wolves, racking up 93 first-team appearances whilst enjoying loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and Ipswich Town along the way.

Wolves cashed in on Iorfa back in January 2019, becoming Steve Bruce’s first signing for a fee of around £200,000.

Iorfa has now played nearly 150 times for Wednesday and played a key role in their promotion-winning campaign last season.

A tall and rangy defender at 6ft 2in tall, Iorfa has impressive pace – something PNE aren’t blessed with, especially at the back.

Where would Dominic Iorfa fit in for PNE?

This feels like a target for the right centre back role in Ryan Lowe’s back three, if true.

Iorfa has played as a right back and centre back in his career and played on the right of a back three for Wednesday last season.

The 28-year-old’s speed would be welcome there with PNE still finding slightly awkward fits in that role since Sepp van den Berg’s exit.

Jordan Storey – ironically a Wednesday target – played well last season and looks set to take that role into the new season.

Bambo Diaby and Patrick Bauer are PNE’s other right-footed centre and both have looked better off in the middle of the back three.

Iorfa would offer a more natural option there but PNE would surely need to move a defender on before bringing one in.

Bauer may be the favourite to go after barely featuring last season and it’s hard to see a deal for Iorfa unless somebody moves on.

We would be surprised to see Iorfa arrive this summer but a centre back link is encouraging with PNE possibly needing some fresh blood back there.
