Report: Norwich City now want to sign Preston North End loanee Cameron Archer

Preston’s hopes of keeping Aston Villa loanee Cameron Archer have taken another hit with Norwich City now believed to be interested.

North End swooped to take Archer on loan in the January transfer window as Ryan Lowe used his friendship with Steven Gerrard to secure a deal.

Archer arrived until the end of the season, giving Preston another striking option – and what a signing he has been.

Archer started on fire with a goal on his debut against West Bromwich Albion and the goals have just kept coming.

Now with seven goals in 18 Championship games – including the all-important winner against bitter rivals Blackpool – Archer has become a fan favourite at Preston.

North End would absolutely love Archer to return for next season too and Lowe has already asked that question.

Sadly, the hopes of that deal actually coming off are dwindling.

The Birmingham Mail note that Archer is likely to be promoted into Aston Villa’s first-team next season.

Elsewhere, TEAMtalk report that Norwich City now want to take Archer on loan next term as they prepare for life in the Championship.

Canaries boss Dean Smith knows Archer well from their time at Villa together. Smith even gave Archer his first-team debut at Villa.

You can therefore understand why Smith may have seen Archer’s exploits at Preston and now wants him at Norwich.

Norwich do already have Teemu Pukki in attack but adding another goalscorer like Archer could help them mount an immediate promotion push.

It’s unclear whether Villa would accept that kind of offer early into the window. We would guess that Villa will at least look at Archer through pre-season.

That would give Villa time to weigh up whether Archer is ready for Premier League action or whether he needs another loan move.

Preston have been a great home for Archer in 2022, but it’s looking unlikely that he will be back next season.
