Preston complete striker signing: Who is Emil Riis, and how much have North End paid for him?

It’s happened! Preston North End have signed a striker!

Just when all hope was being lost, North End have confirmed the signing of Randers striker Emil Riis on a four-year contract.

Now, I know what you’re asking; who on earth is Emil Riis? Well, he’s a 22-year-old striker who spent three years with Championship rivals Derby County between 2015 and 2018.

Riis returned to Randers in 2018, and scored 11 goals in all competition last season, with eight of those goals coming in the Danish Superliga.

He has already scored twice in three games this season, and he has scored once in three caps for the Danish Under-21’s.

Riis stands at 6ft 3in tall, meaning he fits the physical profile that Alex Neil looks for up top, and he actually became something of a disliked figure for Brondby fans last season having scored a goal which featured a blatant handball; if there’s anything Preston fans love, it’s a wind-up merchant!

Riis has been speaking to North End’s official website, and described himself as a ‘big guy’ but ‘pacey as well’, which is exactly what North End have been seeking up top.

“I hope I can help the team to score some goals – that is why I am here and what I want to do. I might look a big guy, but I would say I am pacey as well and I have a good shot and I like to score goals,” said Riis.

So how much are North End paying? Preston’s confirmation of the deal claims that the deal is a ‘significant undisclosed fee’, but BT in Denmark state that the deal is worth around 10 million Danish kroner – which converts to around £1.2million.

Riis should be available for Sunday’s trip to Brentford, pending international clearance, and his club Randers have posted a farewell video for their homegrown striker.

Alex Neil seems pretty happy with the deal, believing that Riis is already somewhat adjusted to English football having been with Derby, and possesses great pedigree having been in the Danish international setup at youth level for many years.

“Emil fits our profile; he’s got previous experience in England with Derby County. He’s young, big, strong and quick and we are very hopeful for him, he’s got good pedigree and he will help us.”

“He is a Denmark U21 international, I think that shows the level that he is currently playing at and obviously we want to try and help to improve him and obviously add his qualities to the squad as well.”

|The fact that he has previously been in England for a number of years is a big box ticked for us and I’m hoping he can hit the ground running. He knows what the Championship is about, so hopefully it’s a good fit,” he added.

Riis has taken the number 19 shirt at Deepdale, and follows in Simon Makienok’s footsteps as a Danish target man to turn out for Preston, whilst being North End’s first permanent signing directly from a foreign club since Keammar Daley in 2011.
