Preston were keen on Cyrus Christie but the free agent could end up joining Championship rivals Watford this summer.
North End have been chasing a right wing back all summer with Ryan Lowe pressing ahead with a 3-5-2 system.
We’re now less than a week away from the start of the season and Lowe still doesn’t have his extra right wing back.
Brad Potts has played well there but a more natural option is needed, with North End seemingly missing out on one target.
Preston were keen on Cyrus Christie
The Republic of Ireland international spent the second half of last season on loan at Swansea City and has now been released by Fulham.
Christie is a proven and experienced Championship wing back, meaning he would have provided what Lowe has been seeking.
However, a deal for Christie allegedly won’t be happening for whatever reason this summer, leaving Preston to look elsewhere.
So what next for Christie?
The 29-year-old remains out of contract and may well start the new season without a club.
That has left Preston fans hoping that a deal can still be resurrected, but another suitor has emerged.
The Athletic report that Watford have held talks with Christie as they look to sign a homegrown right back this summer.
Kiko Femenia is heading for Villarreal whilst veteran right back Mario Gaspar looks set to join Watford, moving in the opposite direction after being released.
Watford do have another right back option in Jeremy Ngakia, but new boss Rob Edwards is pushing for a 3-4-3 system and wants a wing back – just like Lowe and Preston.
Christie fits the bill, but whether Watford go and sign both Gaspar and Christie remains to be seen.
Either way, Watford will appeal to Christie given their hopes of promotion back to the Premier League and the greater wages on offer there, meaning a move to Preston remains a very long shot.
