Preston are keen on Gavin Bazunu but the Manchester City goalkeeper now looks set to join Southampton on a permanent basis.
We’ve said it a million times by now but the focus for Preston simply has to be on bringing in goalkeepers.
As much as we wish Daniel Iversen was coming back from Leicester City, that isn’t likely to happen.
Declan Rudd’s retirement leaves Preston short of cover and four other fringe or youth goalkeepers have been moved on too.
That leaves teenager James Pradic as the only goalkeeper at Preston, and North End simply have to bring in two or three stoppers.
Preston are keen on Gavin Bazunu
One of the top targets has been Manchester City talent Bazunu, with Preston showing an early interest in the Irish goalkeeper.
MORE PRESTON STORIES
Bazunu has enjoyed strong loans at Rochdale and Portsmouth, so a stint in the Championship seemed like the next logical step.
Preston have a great record with loan goalkeepers but it sounds like Bazunu won’t be joining the list of success stories.
That’s because Bazunu is now close to signing for Premier League side Southampton.
The Athletic report that Southampton are on the verge of completing a £10million deal to sign Bazunu.
Negotiations have been going on for two weeks now and Bazunu is heading back to the South Coast having played for Southampton’s bitter rivals Portsmouth last season.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Cook has added that City are demanding a buy-back clause in Bazunu’s move, meaning he could end up back at the Etihad Stadium.
Preston would have been a great loan destination for Bazunu but when an eight-figure deal is on the table, North End stood little chance.
Other goalkeepers are in the mix, such as Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman, but you can cross Bauznu off the list of potential Preston signings this summer.
