Preston have been linked with West Ham United’s Harrison Ashby but a deadline day fight between Leeds United and Newcastle United is emerging.
North End really need a right wing back but it sounds like the window will end without one arriving.
Ryan Lowe made it clear that he wanted a right wing back all summer and yet such a key part of his 3-5-2 system hasn’t been signed.
A number of names have been mentioned throughout the summer and another one emerged earlier this week.
Football Insider reported earlier this week that Preston were interested in a loan deal for West Ham United talent Harrison Ashby.
A right back or right wing back, Ashby has featured six times for West Ham’s first team.
The 20-year-old appears to have real talent and Preston were seemingly hoping for a favour from former North End boss David Moyes.
However, the Scotland Under-21 international is unlikely to be joining Preston – and not just because Lowe has appeared to signal the end of North End’s summer business.
Sky Sports report that Newcastle are in talks to sign Ashby in a permanent deal, believing he can be ideal cover for Kieran Trippier.

Emil Krafth has suffered a serious injury and Ashby is viewed as a player who can be developed into a star.
The Magpies aren’t alone though and The Sun’s Alan Nixon claims via Patreon that Leeds United are also making a late move for Ashby.
With two Premier League clubs chasing permanent deals for Ashby, Preston’s loan interest is unlikely to go anywhere.
It looks Ashby will join the likes of Moses Odubajo, Ethan Laird, Cyrus Christie and Dujon Sterling in being linked to North End but heading elsewhere.
Brad Potts will continue to serve as North End’s right wing back moving forward, and this position should be a top priority heading into January.
