Preston are interested in Lynden Gooch and are rivalling Swansea City in the race to sign the out-of-contract Sunderland man this summer.
North End have been linked with so many wing backs this summer that it’s almost hard to keep track.
Ryan Alebiosu, Marlon Fossey and Nathan Byrne are just some of the names being touted for moves to Preston.
You can now add yet another name to that list with Preston now allegedly keen on signing Gooch as he potentially prepares to leave Sunderland.
Preston are interested in Lynden Gooch
Wales Online report that Swansea want to sign Gooch on a free transfer but face competition from Preston for his signature.
It’s stated that Swansea have a keen interest whereas Preston are just ‘keeping tabs’ on his situation.
Sunderland do actually want to keep hold of Gooch and have opened talks over a new contract after winning promotion.
Yet with Swansea and Preston now keen, Gooch may be tempted to leave Sunderland for a move elsewhere.
Gooch, 26, is a versatile performer who can play all the way up the right flank as well as in midfield or down the left.
That versatility could appeal to Ryan Lowe, as will the fact that Gooch managed 45 appearances in all competitions this past season.
Gooch recorded six assists in a strong season and few could blame him for wanting something new after 10 years at Sunderland.
This also means a battle with Sunderland’s former Preston boss Alex Neil, who recently called Gooch ‘top notch’ after shining against Cambridge.
Neil will understandably want to keep Gooch out of Preston’s clutches but the imminent free agent is now a name to keep an eye on.
Rumour rating: 5/10. Gooch will appeal as a free agent in a real position of need for Preston, but we think North End will go elsewhere for a wing back and Gooch may be more likely to head to Swansea than North End.
