Preston sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on three-year deal

Preston have signed Freddie Woodman as the Newcastle United goalkeeper becomes the club’s first new signing of the summer.

Fans have been begging North End to get a deal over the line and we finally have one completed.

Woodman has joined for an undisclosed fee, penning a three-year deal with Preston with no route to first-team action at Newcastle United.

Some reports had suggested that Woodman would be signing on loan but Preston have secured an enormous coup by landing Woodman permanently.

Woodman, 25, has been in the Newcastle ranks since joining from Crystal Palace way back in 2013, but only made four league appearances.

After six loan spells away from Newcastle – with Hartlepool United, Crawley Town, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Swansea City and Bournemouth – Woodman is now settling down with Preston.

This feels like exactly what Ryan Lowe wanted.

Woodman has plenty of Championship experience and was an outstanding goalkeeper with Steve Cooper at Swansea City.

This also gives Preston a first-choice goalkeeper for years to come having been relying on loanee Daniel Iversen in recent times.

Woodman’s move sees him reunite with Mike Marsh; Lowe’s assistant worked with the goalkeeper at Swansea and his impact on the deal was huge.

“I spoke to the manager, not that he had to sell the football club to me, but the way that he works, he’s very passionate and he spoke very highly of the club,” Woodman told Preston’s official site.

“Obviously I knew Marshy [Mike Marsh] coming here. He played a big part in me picking Preston over other clubs that I had offers from. But also myself, I’ve played against Preston and I’ve never had an easy day at Deepdale, and I want to come here and give these fans something that they deserve,” he added.

Given that James Pradic is the only other goalkeeper at the club right now, Woodman will come straight in as North End’s first-choice stopper.

Boss Lowe is clearly delighted and even admitted his prediction that Woodman will be one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship moving forward.

Lowe also highlighted Marsh’s input on the deal and noted that Woodman’s ability with the ball at his feet is particularly appealing.

“We feel he’s going to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship,” said Lowe. “His attributes are playing out from the back and his goal saving of course, so he’ll be a top player for us and we’re really excited to start working with him. Marshy’s [Mike Marsh] worked with him before with England and with Swansea for two seasons, so when he’s telling you to sign him it becomes a no brainer,” he added.

Woodman is a real signal of intent for Preston and an impressive first signing of the summer as they look to attract more signings of a similar calibre.
