Peter Ridsdale claims Preston will match any rival Championship offers for Cameron Archer

Preston want to re-sign Cameron Archer and Peter Ridsdale has outlined North End’s message to Aston Villa about a potential return.

Archer became Ryan Lowe’s first signing as Preston boss backing January, arriving on loan from Villa.

Lowe utilised his friendship with Villa boss Steven Gerrard to secure a deal for Archer having previously struck a number of moves with his fellow Liverpudlian.

Preston fans knew that Archer was highly rated at Villa but few could have really expected him to make such a huge impact at Deepdale.

Archer racked up seven goals in 20 appearances for Preston, including the all-important winner against Blackpool in April.

The England Under-21 striker is heading back to Villa this summer – but Preston remain keen of another loan deal.

Preston want to re-sign Cameron Archer

Lowe has admitted his belief that Archer needs another season of Championship football under his belt before starring in the Premier League.

Lowe also claimed that Archer had told him there was only one place he wanted to go out on loan this summer if Villa let him out again – and that’s Preston.

North End face a wait to find out if Archer will be available again but there seems to be real hope of another deal.

That would be an enormous boost for North End and director Peter Ridsdale has now outlined Preston’s hopes.

Ridsdale has told From The Finney that Preston are saving a space in the squad in the hope of Archer coming back.

Ridsdale noted that Preston have made it clear that they will match any other offer from Championship rivals to get Archer back.

Villa aren’t rushing a decision but Preston are clearly pulling out all the stops to bring Archer back to Deepdale this summer.

“We have asked the question of Aston Villa,” said Ridsdale. “We have made it absolutely clear that, were he to be available for loan, we will match any other deal in the Championship to get him back and they have just said ‘we will come back for pre-season and take a view subject to what recruitment they do’, so we don’t know.”

“We’re planning the squad without him, but leaving a slot in the squad for him and let’s see what happens,” hea dded.
