Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe has played down any interest in signing Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff in January.

With no Championship games on at the moment due to the World Cup and the January window on the horizon, transfer rumours are always going to emerge.

Football Insider claimed in midweek that PNE were one of a number of clubs chasing Notts County hitman Langstaff.

Bristol City, Cardiff City and Swansea City were all mentioned too with Langstaff shining down in the National League.

The former York City and Gateshead attacker has been in blistering form this season with 19 goals in 20 league games.

Langstaff was at it again on Saturday afternoon, scoring in Notts County’s 4-1 thumping of Scunthorpe United.

Notts County now sit top of the National League table and will be anxiously heading towards January, hoping that Langstaff stays put.

Well, it doesn’t sound like PNE are in the race for Langstaff after all.

North End boss Ryan Lowe was part of Sky Sports Soccer Saturday’s coverage on Saturday afternoon and denied any interest in Langstaff.

As quoted by Football League World, Lowe said that he can ‘categorically’ state that Langstaff isn’t on the North End radar.

We suggested when the rumour first emerged that it smacked of an agent story.

Any time four clubs are linked with one player, it always feels like an agent trying to drum up interest ahead of the transfer window.

That’s no slight; Langstaff is in the form of his life and any agent would be trying to capitalise on that with a big move.

Langstaff is enjoying a Jamie Vardy-esque rise, which is somewhat ironic after PNE’s interest in signing him from Halifax Town back in 2011.

North End do need a striker in January but it looks like Langstaff won’t be making the leap from non-league to Championship with PNE.
