According to The Telegraph, Preston are looking to sign Doncaster Rovers midfielder Ben Whiteman in the January transfer window.

It’s claimed that North End are looking to lure Whiteman to Deepdale next month, but face a battle with Queens Park Rangers for his signature.

The report adds that Blackburn Rovers have held a long-term interest in signing Whiteman, but couldn’t secure his signature over the summer.

That may just open the door for Preston to swoop in and sign Whiteman, who has starred in League One for Donny.

Whiteman, 24, was on the books of Manchester United and Sheffield United before heading to Doncaster in 2017, initially on loan before turning the deal permanent.

The Donny captain has been superb this season, firing eight goals in 22 games, and the time may now be right for him to step up to the Championship.

Whiteman starred against Preston in the FA Cup back in January 2019, controlling the game from a holding midfield role, somewhat similar to how Ben Pearson plays for North End.

Whiteman can also be a threat going forward though, and with both Pearson and Alan Browne out of contract in the summer, Whiteman looks like an ideal addition to Preston’s midfield.

He still has more than two years left on his contract though, so Preston will have to pay up if they want the Rochdale-born midfielder to make a return to the North West.
