Report: Preston want to sign Sunderland's Tom Flanagan for free

Preston are in the race to sign Sunderland defender Tom Flanagan – but more likely for next summer than the January transfer window.

That’s according to new claims from Football Insider.

They claim that North End, Middlesbrough and Bristol City are all monitoring Flanagan’s situation.

The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and could look to leave Sunderland.

It wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see Preston move for another central defender in 2022.

Paul Huntington, Patrick Bauer and Andrew Hughes will all be out of contract at the end of the season, whilst Sepp van den Berg will return to Liverpool.

We could be in a situation where Preston need two, three, four defenders to come in, so bargain hunting is key.

Flanagan has plenty of experience with the likes of Burton Albion and Sunderland, whilst he’s also a Northern Ireland international alongside Preston star Ali McCann.

Flanagan wouldn’t really set pulses racing though, and would turn 31 just a couple of months into next season.

That’s not really the profile of player Preston need, and we always have to question when North End are used alongside two other clubs in a rumour.

That always smacks of agent talk, so we don’t really expect to see Flanagan in a Preston shirt any time soon.
