Preston boss Frankie McAvoy has expressed an interest in bringing St Johnstone midfielder Ali McCann to Lancashire.
That’s according to The Sun on Sunday (22/08, p59), who claim that McAvoy has made his interest in McCann known ahead of next week’s transfer deadline.
The problem for McAvoy is that he allegedly needs to sell players first in order to raise funds for McCann.
The likes of Josh Harrop, Connor Ripley and even Joe Rafferty could be available before the transfer window slams shut.
That may still not be enough to land McCann, who would almost certainly cost a club-record fee if Preston wanted to sign him.
Report from The Sun claimed that St Johnstone want £3million for McCann, with Celtic also looking to sign him.
McCann, 21, has five caps with Northern Ireland at international level and has been the midfield metronome in Callum Davidson’s side.
Many Preston fans may still fancy Davidson as the next Preston boss, whenever the post is available again, but it seems that McAvoy is not only keeping hold of his job, but also looking to raid Davidson’s side.
Splashing more money on midfielders may be a strange one though. Brad Potts, Tom Bayliss and Ben Whiteman all cost more than £1million each, and sinking funds into midfield whilst other areas of the pitch don’t receive the same treatment is risky.
McCann is a quality player though, and would absolutely add class to McAvoy’s midfield, even if getting anywhere near the asking price sounds unlikely.
