Preston want to sign Manchester City’s Gavin Bazunu – but it sounds like a move to Everton may be more likely for the goalkeeper now.
It’s clear that Preston need two or maybe even three goalkeepers this summer.
Daniel Iversen has returned to Leicester City. Declan Rudd has retired whilst Connor Ripley and Mathew Hudson have been released.
Even youngsters Oliver Lombard and Declyn Duggan have gone, meaning there is no senior goalkeeper at Preston. The only shot-stopper on the books is 17-year-old James Pradic.
Preston not only need to add first-team goalkeepers but also depth in the development ranks.
Preston want to sign Bazunu
One of the top targets appears to be City talent Bazunu.
Hailed as ‘special and unique’ by Ireland boss Stephen Kenny, Bazunu is being tipped for a huge future for club and country.
The Sun reported last month that Preston want to take Bazunu on loan for the season.
Sheffield United are also in the race after Bazunu excelled out on loan at Portsmouth this term.
The Irish stopper, 20, is ready for a step up and would represent another exciting loan capture in goal for Preston.
Jordan Pickford and Sam Johnstone impressed years ago before Daniel Iversen followed in their footsteps.
Bazunu could be the next in that line, but Preston face major competition for his signature.
Bazunu could join Alan Kelly at Everton
The Irish Independent now report that Everton have joined the race to sign Bazunu.
There are question marks over the future of ex-Preston stopper Pickford and Everton seemingly want to sign Bazunu.
Bazunu fancies first-team football and could leave City permanently – though Pep Guardiola’s men would want a buyback clause.
Bazunu would surely prefer a Premier League starting role over a Championship loan, making Preston’s pursuit difficult.
One thing to note is that Everton’s goalkeeping coach is Alan Kelly – the Preston legend who also coached Pickford and Johnstone at North End.
Kelly could now end up working with Bazunu at Everton as Preston no doubt look at other goalkeepers.
