Report claims Preston want Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle but it just doesn't add up

There are many rumours over the course of a pre-season that just don’t quite add up.

The rumour mill churns out stories every single day; to put it simply, transfer news is the big driver of views and clicks across the internet.

We have seen many Preston rumours this summer alone that just don’t quite make sense.

The likes of Cole Stockton and Alfie May being linked never really felt right, nor did a move for Dunfermline defender Josh Edwards.

Sol Bamba was another one that didn’t seem likely, as did links to Ravel Morrison and Borussia Dortmund defender Antonios Papadopoulos.

Today, we have another rumour that we will file into the ‘dubious’ pile with Dwight Gayle linked with a move to Preston.

Football Insider claim that Preston are in a five-team race for Newcastle United striker Gayle.

Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Millwall and Reading are also named in the race with Newcastle willing to let Gayle leave.

Look, Preston need a striker – we all know that.

The interest in Andre Gray and Nahki Wells shows that Preston would like to bring in a proven goalscorer this summer.

Gayle certainly fits the bill; he smashed 46 goals across his last two Championship campaigns with Newcastle in 2016-17 and West Bromwich Albion in 2018-19.

The 32-year-old needs a fresh start away from Newcastle but Preston surely won’t be his destination this summer.

Gayle allegedly earns around £40,000-a-week at Newcastle, a wage that would completely shatter North End’s pay structure.

That report suggested that Middlesbrough and Watford were both keen on Gayle but the wages were an issue for them – two clubs with much bigger budgets than Preston.

If you offered Ryan Lowe the chance to work with a striker like Gayle, he would surely love it.

Yet the logistics of the deal just don’t work out and we cannot see any way that Gayle ends up joining Preston this summer.
