According to the Lancashire Evening Post, Preston are close to beating four Championship sides to the signing of Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg.
It’s claimed that Van den Berg has now spoken to Preston over a potential move back to Deepdale having spent the first half of 2021 on loan with North End.
Four Championship clubs are believed to be rivalling Preston, but Frankie McAvoy has always had the upper hand thanks to a first option agreement with Liverpool.
When the Dutchman arrived in February, Preston included a first option in the deal, meaning they had priority over a summer extension.
Terms have been agreed with Liverpool and Van den Berg is now expected to join Preston again imminently.
This is undoubtedly great news. Van den Berg was one of the big success stories to come out of a manic winter transfer window.
Despite mostly being a centre back by trade, Van den Berg excelled as a right wing back, and may be used in that area next season.
The 19-year-old looks set to be Preston’s first summer addition; Ched Evans and Greg Cunningham have also had their short-term contracts extended.
