According to Football Insider, Preston are rivalling Nottingham Forest for the signature of Gillingham midfielder Kyle Dempsey.

It’s claimed that a host of Championship clubs are keen on signing Dempsey, with Barnsley and Luton Town also in the race to sign him.

Dempsey, 25, has hit four goals and one assist in 16 League One outings this season, playing a key role for Steve Evans’ side.

In fact, Evans praised Dempsey just days ago for scoring a ‘special’ goal against Accrington Stanley, as he told Kent Online.

Dempsey initially emerged with Carlisle United before heading to Huddersfield Town in 2015, but has spent most of his time in League One with Fleetwood Town, Peterborough United and Gillingham.

Gillingham snapped him up for free in August having been released by Fleetwood, but his displays are now attracting Championship interest.

It seems strange for Preston to be keen though, as two midfielders have already arrived this month in Ben Whiteman and Jayson Molumby, whilst Alan Browne has signed a new deal.

Daniel Johnson and Ben Pearson could go, but Dempsey seems like a strange target to replace one of them, and only really makes sense as being an alternative target to Whiteman if North End couldn’t get him in.
