It’s been a hectic few days covering this football club, but it may be about to get even wilder.

Preston have been offloading out-of-contract players like Ben Pearson and Darnell Fisher in recent days, whilst Daniel Johnson has signed a new deal until 2023.

That leaves Ben Davies as the last remaining ‘big-name’ out of contract star whose future is up in the air, with plenty of rumours doing the rounds.

Sky Sports claim he has already signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic, which now seems to be incorrect, whilst the Daily Record claim that Burnley are suddenly keen.

Now though, a new contender has entered the race, with Football Insider and The Daily Telegraph both suggesting that Liverpool want to sign Davies before Monday’s deadline.

You read that right – Liverpool think Davies could be a solution to their defensive woes in a deal worth just £2million.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are out long-term, whilst Joel Matip keeps picking up injuries and even makeshift centre back Fabinho finds himself out of action.

Davies appears to be on Liverpool’s wish list as a potential signing, with transfer chief Michael Edwards no doubt convinced that he could be a bargain.

Edwards values analytics highly, and it’s not hard to see why he would like Davies. The Preston man is a strong passer out from the back, which is key to Jurgen Klopp’s style of play.

Davies is quick, reads the game well and has the particularly attractive trait of being a left-footed centre back, which Liverpool would no doubt love to add.

Factor in that he would also qualify as homegrown for Liverpool in European competition, and a move to Anfield would make some sense.

It would be hard to deny Davies such a move, especially with his contract running out soon – and we could see the youth graduate make a stunning late move to Merseyside over the coming hours.
