A surprise rumour emerged last week as Preston North End were linked with a move to sign Motherwell striker Tony Watt.

Football League World reported that Preston were looking to sign Watt – but faced major Championship competition.

Bristol City, Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City are also thought to be keen on Watt, who is out of contract next summer.

Watt has been something of a journeyman. Since breaking through at Celtic, he has turned out for Lierse, Standard Liege, Charlton Athletic, Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers, Hearts, OH Leuven, St Johnstone, CSKA Sofia and now Motherwell.

Watt, 27, now appears settled at Motherwell and is really thriving.

With nine goals in 19 league outings this season, Watt’s goalscoring form has been hugely impressive.

The problem for Motherwell now is that Watt could leave – and Preston are allegedly looking closely.

Motherwell boss and Preston legend Graham Alexander has now admitted that Watt has turned down an offer to renew his contract.

Alexander has told Football Scotland that the ball is now in Watt’s court, with Motherwell potentially accepting that Watt could go.

Preston need to find another striker, so keep an eye on Watt – even if we would be surprised if North End sign him.
