Preston North End striker Milutin Osmajic will not play at the European Championships as Montenegro’s hopes were ended in crushing fashion.

There aren’t too many PNE players off on international duty right now.

Kian Best has shown promise for England’s Under-19’s whilst Alan Browne and Liam Millar are away with the Republic of Ireland and Canada respectively.

Then there is Milutin Osmajic, who started for Montenegro in their 2-0 win over Lithuania to keep their Euro 2024 hopes alive.

The situation was pretty straightforward; Montenegro needed to win against Hungary and hope that Serbia slipped up against Bulgaria.

Milutin Osmajic has his Euro 2024 dream crushed

Aberdeen defender Slobodan Rubezic put Montenegro ahead, but Serbia were 1-0 up at the time and seemingly cruising.

Bulgaria suddenly turned their game around though, going 2-1 up thanks to two goals inside 10 minutes.

However, Montenegro crumbled and saw Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai take over.

The £60m star showed his quality with two goals in a matter of minutes, completely turning the game on its head.

It all came to a crushing end for Osmajic and Montenegro as Serbia equalised in their game and Hungary added a third, ending the Euro 2024 dream once and for all.

Osmajic played the full 90 minutes for Montenegro, partnering captain Stevan Jovetic up front.

The PNE hitman only had 21 touches of the ball but managed two shots on target, one key pass and two successful aerial duels.

Osmajic was also flagged offside twice – something that has been an issue in his time at PNE – and committed three fouls.

It just wasn’t meant to be for Osmajic but with Jovetic now 34, there should be scope for the North End striker to emerge as a key man in Montenegro’s attack moving forward.
