The summer transfer window is moving ever closer, and North End figure to be busy. Missing out on the playoffs means changes need to come, with arrivals and departures expected.
Centre back is a strange area for North End. We have two talented young defenders in Jordan Storey and Ben Davies, who have excelled together in 2019. Behind them, veterans Tom Clarke and Paul Huntington offer experience, but have dipped a little this term.
Some fans may want one of Clarke or Huntington to move on, and another centre back be brought in. Few would want another youngster, but one is again being linked with a move to Deepdale.
We covered reports in January that Oldham’s George Edmundson was a target for North End, though no move materialised. Now, he’s being touted for a move to Preston once again.
Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke claims that North End have been making regular checks on Edmundson, and are weighing up a potential summer bid. Stoke City and Sunderland are also linked, meaning Preston may face a battle if the reports are true.
Edmundson, 21, has come up through the Oldham ranks, and become a key player this term. The 6ft 3in centre back has racked up a huge 52 appearances this season, earning rave reviews.
With just a year left on his contract, Oldham may well be forced to sell Edmundson this summer. North End love a lower league bargain with talent, and Edmundson certainly fits the bill.
However, he’s another young defender, when we already have Davies and Storey. Does Edmundson really fit the bill right now? Maybe not, and maybe Preston have designs on signing Edmundson to loan him out, as adding him to Alex Neil’s first team next season doesn’t quite add up.
