Preston handed warning over Randell Williams after recent interest

If Preston and Frankie McAvoy stick with the 3-5-2, some specific recruits may be needed this summer.

Sepp van den Berg was a pleasant surprise as right-sided wing-back despite being a centre back by trade, but another option there would be ideal.

Darnell Fisher’s January exit left Preston with something of a gap to fill, and it’s unclear whether Joe Rafferty has a future at Deepdale.

One name linked back in October was Randell Williams, with Sky Sports claiming that Preston fancied the Exeter City ace.

No deal was done, but Williams offers intriguing versatility given that he has played a left-footed right-wing-back with the Grecians.

Williams was a hot property last summer, notching five goals and 14 assists last season – but he hasn’t quite matched that this term.

The 24-year-old has registered just four goals and two assists, with form and fitness seemingly deserting him this season.

Williams is out of contract this summer, and whilst Exeter have offered him a new deal, boss Matt Taylor has admitted that he expects Williams to leave.

Taylor claims Williams has struggled this season after rejecting League One clubs in favour or running down his contract, with injuries a problem.

Williams is clearly a real talent, but that he couldn’t quite turn it on in League Two may be something of a warning for Preston.

Will he be able to find his form again by jumping up two leagues? That’s a tough ask, but on a free transfer and with quality displays in recent times, North End may feel that Williams is worth a calculated punt this summer.
