Liverpool’s Preston-mad defender Rhys Williams scores last-gasp goal against Blackburn Rovers

If Preston-born players aren’t on the books at North End, we at least like to see them thrive elsewhere – and Liverpool’s Rhys Williams is one such case.

Williams hails from Preston and is a boyhood North End fan, sadly slipping through the net as he joined Liverpool’s academy aged 10.

Williams may have been with Liverpool for more than a decade now, but he hasn’t let that dampen his love for North End.

We regularly see Williams sending messages about Preston, including a recent request for Cameron Archer to score goals in his loan spell at North End.

Oh, how Archer has fulfilled that, smashing four goals in seven appearances for Preston.

Archer may be shining in his Championship loan move, but that didn’t really happen for central defender Williams this season.

Williams headed to Swansea City but barely featured under Russell Martin, meaning Liverpool recalled him in January.

Now back in Liverpool’s Under-23’s after failing to win another loan move elsewhere, Williams finds himself in a tricky situation at 21 and needing senior action.

On Sunday, Williams featured for Liverpool in and Under-23 clash with Blackburn Rovers – and enjoyed a great moment.

With Liverpool 1-0 down, Williams popped up with a last-gasp equaliser to rescue a point against North End’s rivals.

Williams will have loved scoring anyway, but bagging a goal against a team Preston fans love to hate? That will have made it even sweeter.

It may have only been an Under-23 game, but Williams will absolutely be buzzing with that goal and the chance to enjoy something at Blackburn’s expense.
