Liverpool's Sepp van den Berg doesn't think he'll be playing for Preston next season

Sepp van den Berg has now admitted what many Preston fans expected and ultimately feared – he is returning to Liverpool at the end of the season.

When Ben Davies made a shock move to Liverpool on deadline day in January 2021, Van den Berg was something of an afterthought.

It was all about Davies making a big move to Anfield, and it looked like Van den Berg was just being thrown into the deal.

After initially struggling to even take throw-ins in an unfamiliar wing back role, Van den Berg has established himself as a firm fan favourite at Preston.

Having continued to shine even out of position, Van den Berg has been playing a more familiar right wing back role under Ryan Lowe.

Van den Berg has been outstanding of late and has absolutely bought into everything about Preston during his time on loan.

The Dutchman only signed on for six months last season but returned last summer, and we’re sadly approaching the final stages of his second loan.

Van den Berg is scheduled to return to Liverpool this summer and the chances of him coming back to Preston are slim – we have all known that for a while.

If Liverpool want to sell Van den Berg, he will be way out of Preston’s price range. If Liverpool want to loan Van den Berg out again, he will likely go to a higher level than North End.

That’s sadly where we’re at right now, and Van den Berg has opened up on what the future holds for him.

Speaking to Lancs Live, Van den Berg has predicted that his time at Preston is coming to an end this summer, admitting he reckons the end is night.

Van den Berg did suggest he ‘might as well stay’ if Preston somehow win promotion this season, but gets the feeling that he will be back at Liverpool next season rather than in Lilywhite yet again.

“Of course, I have felt all of the love I’ve gotten ever since I came here and I really appreciate it,” said Van den Berg. “It means a lot to me and helps me. You never know, but I reckon after this season that it unfortunately has to come to an end.

“But, I have really enjoyed my time here and there are still a few months to go, so I will just keep enjoying it while I am here. If we get to the Premier League (for) next year I might as well stay here! You never know; I just live in the moment and enjoy every game, the home games, the away games, seeing all of the fans, being around the training ground with the players.”

“You never know, but we will see. Liverpool is a big club, I have been talking mostly with the loan manager – whatever you want to call it – and it’s been all positive as well, which is good for me. I am really happy and grateful that I got the opportunity here,” he added.
