Preston North End fans are patiently waiting for Tom Cannon to return from Everton but a surprise link to Sheffield Wednesday has re-emerged.
Cannon sparked excitement in the PNE fanbase over the weekend.
The Everton striker was at Deepdale to watch North End beat Aberdeen 2-0 in a pre-season friendly.
Cannon sat in the executive are at PNE, sparking major belief that he will be returning for another loan spell at North End.
Cannon joined on loan from Everton in January and impressed with eight goals in 20 league games.
The 20-year-old has been back with Everton for pre-season but his decision to watch the North End game on Saturday has left fans feeling confident.
Cannon is allegedly suffering with a hamstring injury but Everton had two fixtures on Saturday that he could have attended instead.
The first team were at Wigan Athletic whilst an XI made up mostly of Under-21 players took on Tranmere.
Cannon wasn’t in either squad and rather than watch one of those games, he was at Deepdale.
This didn’t really feel like a former player coming back to see some old friends; this felt more like a potential signing watching on from the stands.
The deal isn’t done just yet but the hope is that Cannon will be a PNE player soon.
Everton may want a forward to come in before allowing Cannon to leave.
Arnaut Danjuma’s arrival certainly helps but Everton are now pushing to sign Almeria hitman El Bilal Toure.
A deal for Toure would hopefully give PNE the green light to sign Cannon in a major move for Ryan Lowe.
The Daily Mail have today suggested that Cannon has interest from Sheffield Wednesday, who wanted to take him on loan back in January.
We can’t see Cannon choosing Wednesday over PNE given this success at Deepdale last season and would suggest this re-emerging rumour isn’t too much to worry about right now – we just have to remain patient and hope Cannon is back in the famous white shirt again soon.
